The types of partitions
Primary Partition
Primary partition is a primary partition that is used to store the operating system. In a primary partition can only be one operating system. The maximum number of primary partitions is 4 partitions.
So, we can install a maximum of 4 operating system, in a hard drive.
· Extended Partition
In an extended hard drive partition can only be made 1 partition. However, an extended partition in the Windows operating system can be subdivided into multiple logical partitions, and each partition can be created drive letter itself.
· Logical Partition
As mentioned above, the logical partition is a partition which resides in the extended partition, and the amount can be more than 4 partitions. Even in a test, in an extended partition can be made more than 347 logical partition.
Types of Windows partition
· FAT12 / FAT16
File Allocation Table (FAT) 12 and Windows 16 was introduced at the beginning of its development. FAT12/FAT16 has many drawbacks such as file naming limitations, and the maximum supported file extensions only 3 digits (such as. Exe). Big up only 2 Gb partition.
· FAT32
Improve FAT32 and FAT removes the limitation on the previous version.
· ExFAT
exFAT is also known as FAT64. exFAT is also a refinement FAT with additional features taken from NTFS. exFAT are supported by the latest generation of Windows such as Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 2008, and Windows 7. exFAT can also be used on XP by adding the patch KB955704.
· NTFS
New Technology File System (NTFS) was introduced since the release of the prime Windows NT. NTFS is equipped with many features such as file compression, attribute indexing, encryption, quota system, and others.
The conclusion is the maximum amount of disk partition in Windows is:
· 4 partition to primary partition.
· 1 partition to extended partition.
· Many partition (because I do not find the exact numbers after doing a search) for the logical partition.
